Christmas Tree Ornaments Decorations Tutorial Details
  • Beginners
  • Under $1
  • 10 mins
DIY Project Supplies
  • A packet of 99cent Make-up pads (80 packs)
  • Cotton buds (cotton tips)
  • Craft glue or glue gun
  • Cotton or string
  • Embellishments of your choice. I used gems & sequins.
You can purchase Cotton Make-up pads in a few different sizes and in bulk packs. I would recommend buying the large size for children or students in primary-age classrooms as this Christmas craft project can be a little fiddly when using the smaller pads if adding embellishments. Older Children and Adults can use any size with a great outcome.

I paid 99c for a packet of 200 of the small size pads and 99c for the large size pads of 80 pieces. Buy the store's home brand. The sequin trim I used was $2 for 4 metres.

MAKE-UP PAD ORNAMENTS INSTRUCTIONS

Part 1 - Mini 3D Christmas Trees

  • Cut a pie shape triangle out of 3 cotton makeup pads
You need 3 Make-up Pads per 3D tree. With a 99c 100 pack of pads, you can make approx 33 ornaments.
  • Decorate your Cotton Make-up Pads or leave them blank for a fresh white look. I used a silver sequin trim around the edge for a lux glamour look to match my tree.
If you want the 3d tree to be larger at the bottom and smaller at the top, you can cut around your Make-up Pads to be different sizes or just use large & small pre-made sizes like I did.
  • Glue one Cotton pad to your Cotton bud, a third of the way from the bottom. Wrap the Make-up pad around the bud creating a cone shape facing downwards. Place glue underneath the cotton pad and along your cut outline.
  • Hold in place until the glue sets, which will ensure the cones sit correctly and straight.
  • Repeat again, moving up the cotton bud. Ensure the top cone will sit under your bud and evenly space out the middle cone.
  • Cut a piece of string long enough to loop over and tie around the ornament.
  • Tie the string around the top making a knot. Glue in place.
  • Leave to dry completely
  • Decorate the top point of the cotton bud where a star or angle would normally go on your tree. I used a stick-on flat back gem for the top star, only because I couldn't find any star gems in my craft stash so circle gem it is. I'm cheap like that haha
Use an embellishment large enough to hide the cotton bud and string
  • Hang these on your Christmas Tree, use for a mini bunting or tie to gift hampers for that personal touch.
