Instructions on your beginners guide to make an easy rectangle surgical style Face Mask that is great for kids or people who don't like restrictive fitted masks

Step by Step Beginner Face Mask Picture Tutorial

INSTRUCTIONS

  • Print your Free Pattern on A4 paper and cut it out
  • Place the pattern on 2 layers of fabric and pin together
  • Cut 1 front panel and 1 back panel for a 2-layer design. If you want more protection, cut 2 back layers instead of 1

TIP - USE A PRINT THAT SUITS THE PERSON WEARING IT
For example, Use Mickey prints for Disney Fans, a cartoon print for a child, a 90's print for a Teen or a plain muted colour for people who love and wear those earthy tones.
  • Pin your panels together by placing your front and back pieces together with the print facing inwards
  • Sew a straight stitch along the top and bottom edges. If using a machine do a backstitch at the beginning and the end of each line. If you are hand-stitching, do a knot at each end
  • Cut along the sewn edge creating a neat line
  • At one open end, turn the fabric the right way out by pulling from the inside
  • Iron the rectangle flat ensuring the edges are out and the back panel is not showing or uneven
  • Fold the edges inside and iron, this will create a clean edge once finished
  • Sew along the top and the bottom of the mask, this will create a polished finished look.

TIP - If you wear glasses, place a metal strip at the top where your nose sits. This can be a foil cooking tin that is folded over & over again, which creates a strong strip. Sew around the strip when sewing the outside seam and when wearing the mask pinch the nose to seal the air gap. No more Fog!
  • Fold 3 even pleats downwards and pin in place
  • Measure your elastic to create loops around your ears or to wrap twice around your head (like I have done in this fitted mask tutorial). I like the double strap which wraps around the back of your neck and back of your head over your ears. But small ring elastics save using up all your elastic (shops are empty) and are comfortable enough for wearing for short periods of shopping, on public transport or to the Doctors
  • Place each end of the elastic into the top and bottom of each side seam
  • Sew down each side, keeping the pleated fabric folds and elastic in place

This easy to sew face mask is comfortable, great for all ages & complainers who do not like wearing a mask. I won't say who that is in my family but I think there is one in every household haha

Fabric Face Masks must be washed after every wear, changed often when wearing for long periods and should not be the only method of staying safe. Social Distancing of 1.5m, staying at home & being tested when sick and washing hands as often as possible are recommended.
