HOW TO DRAW ON YOUR DENIM JEANS POCKETS

Painted Jeans pockets have been on trend for a little while but you do not have to be a talented artist to put some art on your Jean pockets, simple patterns or pictures can be the most effective design in the end without painting. I know, no artist painting skills are needed!

I have had some fabric SHARPIE markers for a while I purchased them on sale and thought why not create some art on Jean's pockets instead of painting. It's cheaper, easier and less messy and gives old jeans new life!

So with my niece's denim jeans, which she kindly lent me, I have created an easy DIY for you to try on your own denim pieces. I think these fabric markers would be very cool to use on the back of a denim jacket or a great way to upcycle your old denim pieces and create wearable fashion art pieces.

MARKER Your Jeans Tutorial

1| FIND A DESIGN
Decide on a look or pattern you would like to put on the pocket. Draw this on a piece of paper or a notebook for future reference. I used a 1960s flower design as inspiration.

For inspiration, you can look here

2| MASK YOUR JEAN POCKETS
With sticky or masking tape, mask around the Jeans pocket so you stay inside the pocket and create a clean edge.

3| PAINT YOUR JEAN POCKETS
With white fabric paint, paint the pockets and leave them to dry. This will be a light background to draw on and to make your colour pop out. An alternative to paint is to bleach your denim pockets. You can learn how to bleach your jeans HERE

4| DRAW ON YOUR DESIGN
Draw your design onto the pocket with a lead pencil using your drawing mockup as a guide.

5| COLOUR YOUR DESIGN
With your fabric markers, colour in your fashion design or bold pattern. It doesn't matter if not perfect as the next step you can correct this.

6| OUTLINE ON YOUR DESIGN

Carefully with your Black fabric marker, outline all your design, connecting any mistakes you made if you didn't stay in the lines when using your coloured markers.

7| YOU ARE ON THE HOME RUN
Peel off your masking tape and you are finished! Cool right

This is a fun fashion DIY to customise your children's clothing, update your wardrobe, create unique gifts for friends or just make something really cool for yourself!

ALTERNATIVE TO FABRIC MARKERS

PAINT YOUR DESIGN DAILY

To paint the design on the pockets, use fabric paint or acrylic paint with fabric medium added. The paint will absorb into the jean fabric so you may need to do a few layers of paint depending on what colours & paint brand you use. Let each colour dry before starting on another colour. Always start with the lightest colour of paint first and clean the brush fully before moving on to the next colour. Let the design dry in the sun.

I recommend handwashing jeans and do not put them into the clothes dryer, the heat will make the paint crack.
